Astrolabe of the oldest Russian Empire factory of geodetic and drawing instruments by Gustav Gerlach - "G.Gerlach" Varsovie.
Made in Warsaw
It is a very beautiful and rare device.
The main material is brass (bronze).
The weight is about 4.5 kg.
The exact date of the manufacture of this item is not stated. Approximately, it is the end of the 19th century - the very beginning of the 20th century.

G.Gerllach (Gustav Gerlach) - German engineer and entrepreneur who was living in Warsaw.
In 1852 he launched the "Special Plant of Geodetic Instruments G. Gerlach", based on the factory opened in 1816 by engineer Joseph Migdalski.
One of the first orders was a large order for the Russian government for the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. (Poland was a part of the Russian Empire from 1815 to 1917).
At that time, the plant was producing three types of theodolites, two types of levels, astrolabes, professional drawing tools and was the main competitor of another old Russian factory of geodesic instruments "F. Schwabe"
The headquarters of the company was located in Warsaw. In 1915, before the separation of Poland from Russia, part of the company assets was transferred to St. Petersburg.
In the same year, the founder of the company Gustav Gerlach died.
After his death, the company was headed by his son Emil Gerlach.
The company started to grow and established the production of anemometers and instruments for aviation, in addition to geodetic instruments.
After the outbreak of World War II, the Germans seized the factory. The company assets were completely destroyed. After the war, it was decided not to restore it any more.
