Karen Violetta Kunkel was a pitcher for Grand Rapids in 1953. Karen was one of the founders of the AAGPBL Players Association. At one time she was an officer in the association. Karen served as a technical advisor on the 1992 movie A League of Their Own.
The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was a professional women’s baseball league founded by Philip K. Wrigley which existed from 1943 to 1954. The AAGPBL is the forerunner of women’s professional league sports in the United States. Over 600 women played in the league. It was not really a well-known fact until filmmaker Penny Marshall premiered her 1992 film A League of Their Own.
Presented is an unofficial baseball autographed by Karen Violetta. She signed it on the sweet spot in blue felt tip pen (“9”).
